One of the most important things that you will need to do to convert your home into a good place for studying is to eliminate distractions. Distractions are the kryptonite of any well-meaning student. While you may have the very best intentions of sitting down to read over the week’s lecture in physics, that task will be infinitely more difficult if your television is turned on and your cell phone is constantly buzzing with text messages. And it is not just these things that can be a distraction from your studies. Unfortunately, unlike a classroom, your home is full of distracting elements. Your refrigerator, bed, television, family members, friends, and general lack of supervision are all distracters that you would not find in a traditional classroom setting. Having the freedom to do whatever you want without the disapproving glance of your professor and peers can be too liberating, making you more prone to procrastinate. To reduce the chances of your getting off track from studying, consider making your home more distraction-free.

First, find a relatively low-trafficked room in the house, such as your bedroom or a guest room. If there is not a low-traffic area in the house, consider taking up residence inside one of the rooms and designating it as a “No Pass” zone while you are studying. This means that as long as you are inside working hard, no one is allowed in. Set up a desk inside and clear the immediate area of things that can divert your focus, such as toys, magazines, or even your cell phone. Keep your television turned off, and if you find yourself constantly reaching for the remote control to turn it on, place the remote control outside of the room so that you cannot get to it as easily.

Let your friends and family know when you are beginning your studies. This will prevent them from accidentally distracting you with conversations or messages. If you make your study times regular, then your loved ones will also know when to plan events around your schedule so that you will not have to miss any studying time to be with them.

In addition, when you find yourself getting bored with studying, do not flip on the television or begin any other task that may consume a lot of time. Instead, go outside and take a breather. Often, some light physical activity such as walking around the front yard or to the mailbox and back will be enough to rejuvenate your mind for more studying.
