College admissions offices and employers don’t just want to see good grades and job experience on your resume, activities matter, too. Although any sort of activity or interest will most likely help, certain types will stand out more than others. These are some of the activities that you should tr to highlight and participate in.
Long term assignments. Show your commitment to dedication by being sure to list any activities that you’ve stuck with for a while. Sticking to one activity over a long period of time shows that you are focused and dedicated to what matters to you, a quality that is especially valuable to employers, as well as colleges that want to retain students.
Leadership opportunities. No matter what kind of activity you’re in, a position of leadership looks great. If you’ve had a leadership or management role in one of your extracurricular activities, don’t leave it off. Although you may not feel like it’s relevant to the work you want to do in college or the workplace, leadership in any capacity helps to build skills and knowledge that can be used in a variety of different situations, and most employers and colleges will recognize that.
National, regional, and accredited organizations. National and even regional organizations carry a lot more weight than independent or local ones, and being a part of them can help you in more than just your resume-you can enjoy a variety of connections through these organizations as well. Some of the popular national organizations include Future Farmers of America (FFA), National Honors Society (NHS), Youth Service America (YSA), and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).
Volunteering. Show that you’re willing to donate your time and efforts to worthy causes by listing volunteering experience. Spend some time at a soup kitchen, women’s shelter, animal shelter, or any other volunteering opportunity that interests you and make a regular habit of helping out.
You can show more than just experience and education on your resume. Extracurricular and personal activities offer insight into what matters the most to you, as well as skills and qualities that you may have gained in your experience. Be sure to list these activities on your resume in particular.
